Pride 2017 was Here!
Last month, a few of the Buds and I cruised downtown to the Portland Pride Parade to shake some hands, pass out fliers, and most importantly, to show our support.
Got to admit, I didn’t think I was much of a parade person. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen too many JFK movies, who knows? Luckily, I was so pleasantly wrong.
We rolled up around 10:30. Downtown was more crowded than the freeway on a Friday afternoon. But unlike your soul-sucking journey home, the streets for Pride overflowed with families, rainbows balloons, fabulous drag queens, leather clad performers, neon signs with messages of love and encouragement, and lovers—young and old.
Tripped out on all the colors and mini donuts—the munchies stuck hard, we found ourselves posted up on Park & Burnside near the start. The Portland summer decided to show up (finally) and clear the gray skies. I was running off of a cheese bagel, sunshine, and a blunt of Sour Diesel.
Things kicked off with the rumble of a dozen motorcycles and the holler of hundreds. All the Portland staples came out with their banner, from Tri-Met to Nike. Messages like “Love Conquers Hate” were abound. What’s more, there were so many organizations dedicated to supporting our fellow LGBTQ citizens, present.
Shamefully, I had no idea, but damn did it put a smile on our faces seeing theirs. “Good Vibrations” only begins to describe the scene.
I snagged a few photos, as you can see. Feel free to share yours here too.
